Blog #1, be gentle with me…

Thanks to a couple of selfless friends, who prefer to remain nameless and to whom I am eternally grateful, I’ve recently been given a couple of Word Press Masterclasses, which have enabled me to create my very own little piece of cyber space.

I know, I’m a little late to the party, but it’s something I’ve simply been unable to commit to for one reason or another for a number of years. For me, building and populating a website has been on a par with completing an online tax return. It’s incredible how many little unpleasant jobs I found to do to, that were seemingly more important than anything else and simply prolonged the inevitable. Finally, it was my children that gave me the impetus, neither were able to comprehend why their father, a photographer, didn’t have a website. And rightly so!

Ask any photographer worth his or her salt to “dig out your best 100 or so images from the last couple of decades” and watch ‘the fear’ descend. Not only will the tog in question have literally terabytes of data spread over any number of devices, some working, some not, but they will simply not be able to make a judgement without sifting through masses of shots first.

Tagging and metadata have made archiving material a lot more user friendly, but it can still can take days! Add into the equation that if the photographer in question is  ‘of a certain age’, they’ll also have boxes of transparencies that were diligently filed away before the digital revolution took hold. These too will need looking at, just in case, which involves holding bunches of celluloid up to a suitable window in the absence of a working lightbox that was hoisted up the loft and disappeared into the abyss before my kids (8 & 10) were born!

I’ve always been of the opinion that a tog is only as ‘good’ as his/her last commission, but ‘good’ is hugely subjective, so if a potential client can’t even see it, he/she can’t even make a judgement call. Long story short, I just had to get some stuff up online. I’ve tried to create galleries with a good spread of the different genres within my varied freelance career to date, but will endeavour to tweak it into submission and add more content as time goes on.

I feel privileged that you have taken the time read my ramblings thus far and there will be more to come for sure, I intend to keep it light hearted and humorous, please feel free to comment, good or bad, I relish a good banter.

If I’m honest, I’ve found the whole experience pretty cathartic and would implore anybody in the same boat to just crack on and get it out there, time waits for no man…

Best,

Pip
